Finally The Bachelor Is Featuring a Contestant’s Past Same-Sex Relationship
As of last night, The Bachelor is back, with Nick Viall on the hunt for love everlasting in the show’s 21st season. It was everything we’ve come to expect from the long-running dating show, and in some respects (i.e. a girl arriving on a camel) even more so.
And we know this season will be a groundbreaking thanks to this promo, in which one of the contestants, Jaimi, mentions a past same-sex relationship. (This season is also predicted to feature an African-American contestant who makes it further than any other in the history of the show — non-white contestants have rarely lasted long enough to develop real storylines.)

“Nick was really receptive to my past relationship with my ex-girlfriend,” Jaimi says in the clip, as the camera cuts to Jaimi and Nick kissing (on a wicker sofa under a flannel blanket with mood lighting, natch). “It felt good to kind of set the stage for the rest of my time here.” Spoiler alert: according to prolific spoiler Reality Steve, Jaimi lasts until the show’s fifth episode, just before the international travel starts up.
While her statement doesn’t mean that Jaimi identifies as queer or LGBT, it does mark the first time someone on the Bachelor has been open about having dated someone of the same sex. The show isn’t exactly known for exploring queer issues, but this teaser could indicate that’s about to change, and our protagonist’s receptivity to Jaimi’s dating history is a positive sign.
