You’ll “Soon” Be Able To Fly From New York To London In 3 Hours

As 2016 starts to crawl to a close, there are many reasons to be apprehensive for the future. Politics, the environment, Taylor Swift’s career — there are just so many unknowns and possibilities for disaster. But when it comes to air travel, at least, things might just be looking up (pun intended).

By 2023, the Denver-based aerospace start-up Boom plans to have a high-speed supersonic plane that could get you from New York to London in just three hours and 15 minutes, according to New York Magazine. Three hours and 15 minutes! You can barely watch six episodes of Sex and the City in that time! Pop a Xanax to make the flight more bearable and you’ll still be half-asleep while trying to get through customs and immigration at Heathrow.

This super speedy flight will be the result of a new partnership between Boom and Virgin Galactic’s Richard Branson. Their plan is to create a passenger plane that can fly at the speed of sound and cut travel times almost in half — for $5,000 per round-trip ticket, nbd.

And Boom isn’t the only company planning to revolutionize air travel. Companies like Boeing and Lockheed Martin are developing supersonic jets while aerospace start-ups Aerion and Spike are working to build high-speed business jets.

Blake Scholl, CEO of Boom, told New York:

“We’re getting better computers, getting better phones, and yet we’re still flying, basically, these 1960s airplane designs. We’ve made planes safer. We’ve made them more efficient. But we haven’t made it any easier to get around the planet.”

While the launch date isn’t till 2023, Boom is planning to have the first “safety test” flights scheduled for late next year, using a scaled-down prototype of the plane that can be used for safety testing.

So as you wait for the day when you can fly across the world in the time it takes to go on an above average Tinder date, start thinking of all the places you could plan a weekend girls trip in ~2023~. Tokyo? Sydney? The sky is *literally* the limit!!!
